The ‘Movements'
The experience begins with a series of self-portraits. The varying styles and tones of these works reflect the changing emotional states of this troubled artist. In the first movement we experience Vincent’s homeland, the Netherlands. This ‘Dutch’ period is stylistically dark: landscapes, people and still life are painted in subdued, earthy tones. Paintings from this time are distinctly different to the vibrant style that would emerge over the following years, laying the foundations for ‘modern’ art.
From the Netherlands, we move to France. Inspired by the energy of Paris and the Impressionist painters, Vincent began to develop a brighter palette as he captured scenes of beautiful flowers, gardens and fruit bowls. His painting began to transform into the celebrated style for which he is known.
Next, we make our way via train through the south of France from Paris to Arles. Van Gogh’s time in this region was perhaps the happiest of his life, and certainly the most productive. His optimism is clearly evident in his reinvigorated approach to painting. This movement begins with Van Gogh’s Sunflower series, then transitions to depictions of the life, landscapes and people.
A Truly Moving Experience
Van Gogh Alive is set to a powerful classical score that reflects the emotional turbulence of Van Gogh’s life. The perfect accompaniment to his story, this moving soundtrack will enrich your experience of both his art and state of mind throughout the tumultuous times that surrounded his amazing career. Visitors have been calling Van Gogh Alive ‘stimulating’, ‘engulfing’ and ‘unforgettable’.
