When the Toyota FJ Cruiser first hit production with the 2006 model year, fans were happy to have another short wheelbase off-road option to choose from. It’s throwback FJ40 styling cues struck a chord with certain enthusiasts and almost instantly a cult following was born. 12 years later, with FJ Cruisers no longer in production, the fanbase thrives. Providing the perfect opportunity for those fans to gather, FJ Summit builds community and celebrates the FJ as owners gather for a long weekend of ‘wheeling and fun in the Colorado mountains.
Intensely popular with FJ fans, 2018’s 12th annual FJ Summit registrations sold out in less than 30 seconds! The size of the event is limited by the capacity of its host town, Ouray, and purposefully kept that way by event organizers.
With close to 400 vehicles attending, the vast trails in the San Juan mountains of southwestern Colorado provide plenty of space to explore. An event that welcomes the whole family and ‘wheelers of all levels, FJ Summit has become a bucket list trip for many with others attending all or most of the last 12 annual events.
As for the trails, they’re all about having fun with FJs and enjoying the amazing scenery. While there are a few trails that pose a higher level of difficulty, like Pougkeepsie Gulch, most are moderate-to-easy and perfect for the casual adventurer.
Some FJ owners go all-out, upgrading their FJ’s suspension and more, but most keep theirs comfortably outfitted and practical for the road as well as the trail. Updated roof racks, added lights, and more capable tires are common first modifications for FJ Cruisers—providing them with more than enough to conquer trails such as Imogene Pass or Governor Basin.
We saw a lot of Nitto Ridge Grapplers at the 2018 FJ Summit, owing to their well-mannered road going attributes in addition to off-road capabilities. And while the majority of vehicles at FJ Summit are in fact FJs, other vehicles come to play as well—from Toyota 4Runners to Lexus GX 470s, and even a few Jeeps joining the fun.
Walking around the historic town of Ouray, you’ll be able to see FJ cruisers of every variety. Better yet, at FJ Summit you’ll be able to see rigs of every variety out on the trail.
Whether you’re a weekend warrior or just starting off, the FJ provides a platform that can take you to places many others don’t get to see and enjoy. Finding an event like FJ Summit, or even just a club of friends, is a great way to help you get out and explore more!
