Maximize Your Email ROI with the Help of Mailchimp's Content Optimizer Tool

Quick Facts

What is Mailchimp's Content Optimizer?
Mailchimp's Content Optimizer analyzes top-performing campaigns to offer personalized suggestions for improving email copy, imagery, and layout.
How does the Content Optimizer improve emails?
It provides inline suggestions during email creation, comparing your content to top-performing emails in your industry for better engagement.
How many words should an email contain for skimmability?
For optimal skimmability, keep emails under 200 words, with sentences shorter than 25 words for better readability.
Why choose Mailchimp for email marketing optimization?
Mailchimp offers detailed analysis and suggestions based on industry best practices, helping to enhance email performance effectively.
Where can I access the Content Optimizer feature?
The Content Optimizer is available in Mailchimp's new email builder or email campaign reports, exclusive to Standard or Premium plans.
Will better email copy actually help me get more opens and clicks?
Yes. Email optimization tools analyze what works in top-performing campaigns to give you specific suggestions for improving your copy, design, and layout. By following data-driven recommendations for things like sentence length, email word count, and formatting, you can make your emails easier to read and more engaging, which typically leads to better engagement from your audience.
How do I know if my emails are actually working or just sitting in inboxes?
Most email tools show you basic stats, but a good optimizer tells you why your emails perform the way they do. You get detailed reports on clicks, opens, bounces, unsubscribes, and more. You can also see how your emails stack up against industry best practices, so you understand exactly what's working and what needs improvement.
Can I get help writing better emails without hiring a copywriter?
Absolutely. An email content optimizer gives you inline suggestions as you write, checking things like sentence length, heading structure, spelling, grammar, and link formatting. It compares your email to successful campaigns in your industry, so you get personalized recommendations based on what actually works for businesses like yours.
What's the difference between a regular email tool and one with optimization features?
Regular email tools let you send campaigns and see how they performed. An optimizer goes further by analyzing millions of data points from successful emails and telling you specifically how to improve your next campaign. It checks readability, formatting, and other elements before you send, plus gives you detailed insights after your email goes out.
Do I need special skills to use an email optimization tool?
No. Optimization tools work right inside your email editor with real-time suggestions as you create your content. You don't need to understand technical details or marketing jargon—the tool simply points out what to improve and why, making it easy for anyone to create better-performing emails.

Make Your Email Content More Engaging

Most email marketing tools only tell you how your email campaigns performed. We tell you why. The Mailchimp Content Optimizer analyzes millions of data points from top-performing campaigns and makes personalized suggestions to improve copy, imagery, and layout in future emails.

About the Content Optimizer

When you send email campaigns to your audience, Mailchimp can help you decide how to create and design your email content. Mailchimp's Content Optimizer, only available on the Standard or Premium plan, gives additional guidance with analysis based on industry best practices. Access this feature in the new email builder or your email campaign reports before sending your next email.

How it works

When you create an email campaign in the new builder, we'll provide inline suggestions based on marketing best practices. Your email will be compared to top performing emails from Mailchimp users within your industry who have the same marketing objective as you.

The Content Optimizer reviews writing elements like the length of sentences and headings, as well as errors in link formatting, merge tags, spelling, and grammar. While merge tags aren't part of a heading or sentence's word count, we still prioritize checking merge tags and links for any errors.

After you send your email campaign with the new or classic email builder, we'll provide a report based on your contacts' activity that includes information from the Content Optimizer. You can see information granularly such as click tracking and performance, e-commerce tracking for connected online stores, bounces, unsubscribes, and more.

Boost your email engagement with data-driven suggestions

See what you'll find in your Content Optimizer analysis for each best practice:

  • Get Your Point Across with Skimmability
Reviews how easy it is to skim your email for understanding. We'll count how many words are in your email and the estimated time it takes to read. When you keep your sentences under 25 words, the content of your email under 200 words, and use smaller words, you'll have a higher skimmability score.

  • Reach Your Goals With Links & CTAs
Assesses the links and calls to action (CTAs) that keep your audience engaged. We'll show you how many links, social links, and CTAs you included in your email. Adding CTAs and links within the email that connect to web content or your social media can result in a higher Links & CTAs score.

  • Tie Your Content Together with Text & Visuals
Analyzes the use of images, headings, and tone to create interest for your audience. The optimizer will review the words and phrases in the email and assign a tone to the overall email. If there’s another tone that has been shown to be more effective for your marketing objective, the Content Optimizer will recommend that instead.

You'll also see how many images you used as well as your average heading and subheading lengths. If you keep your headings and subheadings short, you'll increase your score in this category.

  • Show Off Your Style With Typography
Checks the consistency of your font sizes and text styles. The optimizer will review the size ratio of your headers and subheaders and how consistent the paragraph text is in the body of your email campaign. We'll also average the size of your headers and subheaders and paragraph text. To make a professional, easy to read email, the fonts you use can go a long way.
